moving & wallpaper = the devil
let me introduce you to "trailer kaci."
last september jay & i were hauling a HUGE trailer slam full of luggage back from the TA retreat. Now keep in mind i was tired. my staff and i had just planned & lead a retreat for 180ish folks (mostly teens) and i was spent. but after stopping at our first red light and sliding side to side we realized something had to change...
so several miles down the road we pulled over and decided we had to readjust the luggage. yep, move it. jay cant get in the trailer. he's too big and it's too full. so guess who had to climb in....
on my KNEES (in the middle of pillows, sleeping bags and luggage) i picked things up from one end of the trailer and threw it to the other side. yes, i am a beast.
jay was amazed. so now when i pick up anything heavy or push through something extremely tough - jay refers to me as "trailer kaci."
we also figured out this week my parents (mom especially) LIVES in "trailer" mode. she never stops.
moving woes & joys:
- movers came an hour & a half late. problem #1.
- how does all that stuff get in our attic? and where, seriously where??, did it come from? vapor is going to LOVE me!
- sweet but NOT the brightest movers. i think they were just inexperienced...?
- waiting, waiting, waiting on movers. they've arrived but oh my they are slow!
- the movers came at 11:30. didn't make it over to the house til 3. really? they said a couple of hours total.
after having a late lunch and still no movers. i was lit. so i went to the condo myself. it was ridiculous. i had to go in my moms car b/c jay was blocking me in.
dad & lizzie soon join me in jays truck b/c i called in for backup. we start loading. jay calls. i have the keys to my car & he has to get to church. awesome. so we load my moms car asap and send dad with keys and a load for my mom & girls to put away...
lizzie and i were LAPPING the movers up & down the steps with stuff. we worked hard & fast. finally we all were ready to leave the condo. (without the tvs, couch, table & other stuff mind you!!)
the mover came over and said "schomburg road right? i was going to stop & get something to drink but wanted to check the address." umm....NO! we're moving like a mile away. oh my.
we finally get to the house. my car is completely blocking the driveway. first off, i dont know why it's still there since jay left. then i hear - oh your car battery is DEAD. WHAAAT?! not just dead - but blocking the dang driveway.
this is when i started crying.
then - "trailer kaci" arrived.
lizzie and i started unloading the MOVING truck. i think we made the moving guys mad but seriously - get outta my way!
she called in for backup. (enter 2 college guys i've only met a couple times...) just as these 2 guys arrived the moving men had managed to get a wardrobe stuck in our staircase. that took 30 - 45 mins, unreal. after scrapping up my nicely painted walls and making marks all over the place - they finally got that mug in place. i was in shock.
after that train wreck i sent the jack, john mark and lizzie to the house to get the couch and whatever was left. it took them an hour MAX. should've used them all day...instead.
daniel appliance - FABULOUS!!!!!! they came in, joyfully, and did their job with excellence. they were happy & fun. i loved those 2 guys. i'm going to write daniel a note. they'll be one of my handwritten notes for the week.
ohhhhhhhhh but the redneck part of the appliance arrival was the fact that my dad had them put the old fridge on our PORCH. oh no, no, no - that had to go PRONTO.
the next stupid thing - we cannot get our mattress (the bottom box springs part) up the steps. so we're having to get rid of it and buy 2 single bed ones. this junk never ends.
so until then - there's a mattress thing sitting in my dining room. super fun!
oh and finally today my kitchen plumbing & electrical work is being done. making bottles in the bathroom sink - not fun.
i'm pretty sure every man my dad has ever met has worked in my kitchen at some point. go NORM!
things that i love and/or will never get old:
- pacifiers falling out of the couch when moving
- gabe's toys, bibs, etc laying around the house
- the incredible way people come together when things are hard or nuts!
- lizzie garrards hugs, baby feet/hands, heart to SERVE and dances to make me laugh when stressed.
- claire bringing homemade goodies in between school graduation and her youngest daughters bday
party. who does that?!
- TAs (and staff!) who WORK, WORK, WORK to get the job done. no matter how much the job sucks. couple of examples here: callie hampton scrubbing our master bathroom & shower, carey blakenship, kristen hall and my dad attempting to hang pictures (lots of laughs!), sarah jane gaither running outside to find boxes that shouldn't have gone out!, girls and my mom taking care of gabe like he was their own, maclain hardin swinging and singing to gabe, 2 college guys just home for summer - i've met only a few times coming to work for hours....i could go on.
- callie & kristen hanging gabes alphabet.
- chris lockhart and adam keller - fabulous, fabulous men.
- carolyn smith, denisha thomas, anna justice, abby fitts & sidney spear - painting for HOURS.
- my family. just beyond belief. they are such gifts. hilarious, godly and willing to help anyone. blessed.
i only slept 2 hours last night. worst.night.ever.
GABE WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he never complained. he stayed patient the entire day. what a kid.
but we made it! we're IN. other than the mattress in the dining room and some kitchen things we're done. i have to paint chairs & stools...but that may be a while :)
